A Kurdish Official: The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan will not nominate Barham Saleh to the presidency of Iraq

Baghdad, Member of the Political Bureau, and Spokesman for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Saadi Ahmed Bira, said that the candidate of his party for the Presidency of the Republic will be from the leaders of the Union exclusively, and that the name of Barham Saleh, who broke away from the party and formed the Alliance for Democracy and Justice, is not nominated to vote at a meeting of the political bureau of the party scheduled today.

"The meeting of the Political Bureau on Sunday will be devoted to discussing the internal issues in the party and deliberating on how to resolve the issue of the post of President with our partner the Kurdistan Democratic Party," Saadi Bira told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper.

"Barham Salih is not a member of the PUK, and therefore his candidature for the Union is still out of the question."

He explained that the two ruling parties in the region, has not yet identified any candidate for the post of President, noting that "in today's meeting we will determine definitively who will be our candidate."

"I did not talk about Barham Saleh, but I said that we will nominate a leader from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan for the post of President," he said.
