BAGHDAD, First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Hassan al-Kaabi called on Morocco's House of Counselors to reopen the Moroccan Embassy in Baghdad.
"The Iraqi delegation headed by al-Kaabi met on the sidelines of the Conference of the Unions of Councils of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at its 14th session in the Moroccan capital of Rabat, with the head of the Moroccan House of Counselors, Abdelhakim Ben Shomeis, at the headquarters of the Moroccan Parliament," said a statement by the Information Office of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
"Iraq has historical ties with Morocco, Iraq was the first country to recognize its independence and the first to open an Embassy. For these reasons, we focused our efforts on reopening the Moroccan Embassy in Baghdad," al-Kaabi said during the meeting.
"Today, Iraq is going through a very important phase, which is the reconstruction of its cities and the reconstruction of its infrastructure, and such goals need the support of our Arab brothers and the Islamic and international worlds," he said.
For his part, Shomeis thanked Iraq's position in support of the unity and independence of the Moroccan territories, and said: "The two countries are linked to more than 40 agreements in various fields."
"Everyone in Morocco is following closely what is going on in Iraq. You were in the front line to fight terrorism and you won with the help of Allah. Our country's position is always supportive of Iraq and we reject any interference in its internal affairs," he said.
With regard to the reopening of the Moroccan Embassy in Baghdad, the President of the House of Counselors that he will push the government to accelerate the opening, as we see a diplomatic vacuum would have played a more positive role and the exploitation of economic opportunities available in Iraq.
The two sides agreed to exchange legislative experiences between the two countries, especially the development of the Institute for Parliamentary Development, which began in Morocco years ago and has considerable experience in this field.
