New York, The Kingdom of Bahrain participated in Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York this month.

The Chargé d’Affairs to the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, Hatem Abdulhameed Hatem, delivered a speech in which he emphasised the importance that the Kingdom attaches to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the prevention of the spread of nuclear weapons, and promoting cooperation in the uses of nuclear energy.

He referred to the Kingdom’s accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 1988, the International Convention for the Elimination of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, the Convention Nuclear safety, and the Kingdom’s ratification of the agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency to implement safeguards within the framework of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and its attached protocol.

The Chargé d’Affairs affirmed the Kingdom’s support for the inalienable right of states to benefit from the multiple fields of nuclear energy applications, especially those related to health, educational and environmental aspects, and the provision of clean energy, which constitute an essential part of the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals, in accordance with international law, and within the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which is the legal basis for the IAEA’s safeguards system.

He also highlighted the importance of advantages in the exchange of nuclear knowledge and techniques between industrialized and developing countries, and subjecting all nuclear facilities and programs to comprehensive International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.

As part of the Kingdom’s emphasis on the importance of transparent and responsible development of nuclear programmes for limiting the spread of nuclear weapons, the Chargé d’Affairs stressed the need for the Islamic Republic of Iran to abide by all its international obligations and cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency to address all pending issues related to its nuclear programme, in a manner that guarantees its nature.
