Climate Affairs Special Envoy receives UNGA President

Special Envoy for Climate Affairs and Chief Executive Officer of the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina, received here today the President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Abdulla Shahid, who is currently on a visit to the kingdom.

 

Dr. Bin Daina commended the tremendous efforts being exerted by the UNGA President in achieving sustainable development goals and unifying the international efforts to address the impacts of climate change, affirming the kingdom’s keenness to strengthen its cooperation and joint action with the UN in the field of preservation of the environment and climate change for the sake of a brighter future and a secure world environment.

 

He asserted that Bahrain has taken multiple measures to improve the environment protection nationwide, in line with the directives and forward-looking vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, as well as the unwavering follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

 

He pointed out that the kingdom’s efforts reflect its commitment to honouring its pledges during the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) on reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2060, meeting the challenges of climate change and protecting the environment.

 

He added that climate change is a global challenge that requires cooperation and shared responsibility, noting that Bahrain announced its pledge to support the four major international initiatives in the field of climate change, namely the Global Ocean Alliance Initiative, the Global Methane Pledge, the Green Government Initiative, and the Emirates Strategic Initiative to Achieve Climate Neutrality by 2050.

 

He called on other countries to join the international community in achieving sustainable development goals by expanding the possibilities for developing a green economy while maintaining the temperature of the Earth below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

 

UNGA President commended Bahrain’s role and achievements in the field of environmental protection and climate change, which have earned it a good reputation and the confidence of organisations and countries.

 

He praised the regional and international environmental treaties signed by the Kingdom out of its keenness to participate in efforts to address the challenges facing the world.

 

He also praised the SCE’s efforts and distinguished initiatives and programmes related to environmental and climate affairs, stressing the UN keenness to back countries that support climate protection and the economy in order to achieve sustainable development goals.
