The French Embassy in Beirut on Thursday issued the following statement by French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian:
"After the resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri, [the Lebanese] must speed up the formation of a new government that's capable of carrying out the much-needed reforms, in a bid to safeguard the future of Lebanon.
In the context of the economic, social, and political crisis that Lebanon has been enduring for several weeks, all the Lebanese political officials must demonstrate a spirit of national unity and responsibility to ensure the country's stability, security, and best public interest.
In this sense, relentless efforts must be exerted to refrain from provocative acts and violence, and to defend citizens' right to demonstrate peacefully.
All the political forces must begin to alleviate all the obstacles that could hinder the formation of a new government that's capable of meeting all the legitimate aspirations expressed by the Lebanese men and women, and to take all the necessary decisions to revive the Lebanese economy.
France expresses its readiness to support Lebanon in this approach, within the framework that has been set by CEDRE Economic Conference for the Development of Lebanon through reforms and the establishment of enterprises. France stands side-by-side with Lebanon at this crucial stage, as it has always done."
