Mashnouk meets Director of Economic and Social Development Fund, CEO of Mercy Corps

Caretaker Minister of the Interior and Municipalities, Nouhad Mashnouk, met on Monday with Director of the Economic and Social Development Fund, engineer Haitham Omar, who gave him a detailed briefing on the programs and projects that have been implemented in recent years in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities.

Omar most notably briefed the Minister on the establishment of a solid waste treatment plant in Ber Elias, the modernization of irrigation canals and water tanks in the Wadi Khaled - Akkar, and the establishment of a purification plant that separates spring water from sewage networks in Hermel.

The programs benefited from an EU donation of Euros 16 million. It has been a wonderful experience with the support of the Minister Mashnouk, especially that the waste treatment plant covers an area where 300,000 people of Lebanese and Syrian origin live, or 8% of the population in Lebanon, Omar explained.

Neal Keny-Guyer, the CEO of Mercy Corps, also visited Mashnouk in the company of the director of the foundation's office in Lebanon, George Antoun. Guyer explained the Foundation's programs in Lebanon, especially projects to help municipalities cope with the repercussions of the Syrian influx.

Neal Keny-Guyer saluted the efforts of the Minister maintaining Lebanon's security and stability despite the great challenges that Lebanon and the region are undergoing.

In turn, the Minister of Interior stressed the importance of "developing specialized programs that contribute to easing the social tension resulting from the Syrian refugee crisis."
