Pentagon announces a new candidate to head the US Central Command

BAGHDAD, US President Donald Trump has nominated a Marine General to head CENTCOM, which oversees US military activities in the Middle East and Afghanistan, the Pentagon said.

If the Senate approves the appointment, Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie will replace current Commander General Joseph Fotel, who is believed to be retiring.

The new post will add a fourth star to the rank of McKenzie, who is currently the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, and has appeared several times at press conferences in recent months.

The US military divides the world into multiple leaders, with CENTCOM responsible for several hot war zones in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and the Gulf.
