Baghdad The head of the United Nations Mission in Iraq / UNAMI / Jeanine Hennis Plasschaert affirmed: “The United Nations supports the elections technically and does not replace the commission.”
“The Election Commission has done a job that is not easy, and so far we are providing technical assistance, and the UN will not replace the commission,” Plasschaert said at the commission’s press conference.
She added, “The Iraqi government has submitted a request to the United Nations to help protect the integrity of the elections by observation and inspection,” indicating: “Observation is the cornerstone of the presence of the international community, and this is what the Iraqi government requested from the Security Council, which did not take the decision on this request.”
Plasschaert stated: “Monitoring is nothing new and it aims at the integrity of the electoral process and there is nothing new about Iraq,” stressing: “The elections are exclusively Iraqi led by the Iraqis, and what happens is borne by the Iraqis and the United Nations has nothing to do with them.
