Shura Chairman highlights Bahrain counterterrorism strides

Manama: Shura Council Chairman Ali bin Saleh Al-Saleh highlighted Bahrain’s strides in combating terrorism, money laundering and terror-linked finance.


He paid tribute to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, hailing the royal farsighted vision which enabled Bahrain to combat these scourges through a comprehensive approach.


He highlighted updated national legislations and the establishment of specialized committees and centres and extremism, reiterating Bahrain’s international counterterrorism efforts.


Al-Saleh made the statement as he addressed a remote panel discussion session as part of the The Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (5WCSP) .


The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Geneva, and the Parliament of Austria jointly organized the two day Conference with the support of the United Nations (UN).


The conference which concluded today was held under the theme “Parliamentary leadership for more effective multilateralism” to deliver peace and sustainable development for the people and planet.


“Bahrain is considered a pioneer, through its legislative authority, in enacting legislation related to terrorist crimes, combating money laundering and terrorist financing, and in criminalizing the use of websites and information technology for terrorist purposes”, he said.


He stressed the role of The King Hamad International Center for Peaceful Coexistence, which was established in 2018 in strengthening the common human values between religions and promoting constructive dialogue between civilizations and interfaith coexistence.


He highlighted the recent establishemeent of committee in charge of combating extremism  and terrorism and clamping down on terror financing as per the royal decree which was issued on August 16, 2020.


He said that defeating terrorism requires the adoption of an integrated strategy that counters ideological foundations underlying this scourge and promotes the values of tolerance, coexistence and respect for religions.


“Terrorism is one of the most prominent challenges facing of the world”, he said, urging international efforts efforts  within the framework of the UN strategy against terrorism, to activate Security Council resolutions, international agreements, and relevant guiding laws.
