UNFPA director visits Hariri: Investing in the youth of Lebanon can increase economic and social stability

Prime Minister-designate SaadHariri received today at the Center House a delegation from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)headed by its Executive Director Natalia Kanem.

After the meetingKanem said: "I am very pleased to be here in Beirutfor the Arab Regional Population and Development Conference which is being held here this week. It is also the 25thanniversaryof operations of the UNFPA in Lebanon, which has been a very productive exercise looking at the reproductive health and rights of women in this country. I would like to congratulate the country for establishing a national commission that is looking at the Sustainable development goals through the year 2030, which also includes working groups, including one on statistics and data systems. Lebanon is also developing and submitting its SDGVoluntary national report which was done last June at the high level form at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

This gives me the opportunity to reiterate the commitment of the United Nations to continue to work very closely with Lebanon in order to implement the 2030 agenda on sustainable development. I would just like to briefly highlight areas that are particular to our mandate: health, gender quality, youth participation and data systems, which we are doing in conjunction with all the relevant stakeholders in the country.

It is my belief that this investment in the young people of Lebanon, which was identified as one of the top five priorities of the country in Brussels at a conference in April has the potential to increase economic and social stability in this beautiful country, and to assure the youth of the country that the future holds great hope for their productivity and their contributions."

Earlier, Hariri met with the Kuwaiti Ambassador to Lebanon Abdel AalAl Kinai and discussed with him the political developments and the bilateral relations between the two countries.
