(Update 1) Nasrallah: recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over Golan is pivotal event in Arab Israeli conflict

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Tuesday considered the US recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the Golan as a pivotal event in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Sayyed Nasrallah's words came in a televised speech, shedding light on most recent political developments in Lebanon and the broad region.

Sayyed Nasrallah saluted the resilience of the people in Gaza in the face of the enemy's aggression, and paid tribute to the people of the West Bank and its martyrs, especially the brave young martyr Omar Abu Layla.

He also saluted the Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails, as well as the resilience of the Yemeni people.

He also extended condolences to the Iraqi people, government and command on the fallen victims of the vessel which sank in Mosul.

Nasrallah also pointed out that the main aim of his speech was to comment on US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to Lebanon and his statements. "However, I will begin with the more important development represented in the US recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the Golan, and consequently the annexation of the Golan to the Israeli enemy," Nasrallah corroborated.

Nasrallah deemed US recognition of the annexation of the occupied Golan to the Israeli enemy as bearing disregard for the Arab and Islamic worlds, especially that the entire Arab and Islamic countries unanimously agree that the Golan is an Arab Syrian land occupied by Israel.

He said US President has discounted everyone, including his allies and friends, for the sake of Israel's interest.

Nasrallah added that the US Administration and Trump disregard international laws, resolutions and consensus.

He said the whole world unanimously recognizes that the Golan is an occupied Syrian land, yet Trump has violated such a consensus for the sake of Israel.

"This proves that the U.S. administration does not recognize the U.N., the Security Council and the international resolutions. The US Administration only uses these institutions in a way that serves its interests," Nasrallah maintained.

"This also proves that international resolutions and institutions cannot protect any right that belongs to the people including the restoration of an occupied land," he added.

Nasrallah pointed out that the definitive priority for America is Israel, discounting any other interest in the region when that contradicts with Israel's.

"Hence, such an ultimate sponsor of Israel cannot be an honest mediator in the peace process," Nasrallah said, saying the U.S. has struck a grave blow to the peace process based on the land for peace principle.

He also expected that Trump will recognize Israel's sovereignty over the West Bank.

Nasrallah also pointed out that what encouraged Trump to take the decision on the Golan was the stance made earlier by the Arab and Islamic worlds on Al Quds issue.

Nasrallah called on the Arab world during the upcoming Tunisian Summit to withdraw the Arab Peace Initiative endorsed in the year 2002, as a real response to the Golan issue.

On the Pompeo's visit to Lebanon, Nasrallah said Pompeo has brought up the name of Hezbullah 18 times and Iran 16 times within minutes in his address at the press conference, the matter that affirms that "we are on the right."

Nasrallah said that Popmeo's statement did not include any correct phrase, where he alleged that Hezbullah has been Lebanon's problem for the last 34 years, without talking about Israel's invasions and massacres committed in Ansar, Al Khiam and in Palestine, not to mention its daily violations of Lebanon's sovereignty, its construction of walls inside the Lebanese territories and disallowing Lebanon from benefiting from its maritime resources.

On Pompeo's utterance that Hezbullah stands an impediment in the way of the Lebanese people's dreams, the Hezbollah leader said Israel is the one endangering Lebanon since the year 1948 protected and sponsored by America, whereas the resistance has thwarted such a danger and restored its occupied land.

Nasrallah said that the real purpose of Pompeo's visit to Lebanon was to incite the Lebanese against each other.

He also underlined that Hezbullah is committed to Lebanon's civil peace, national coexistence and unity, saying his Party is highly keen on peace and prosperity.
